1Password vs LastPass in 2026: The Answer Has Never Been Clearer
LastPass had two major breaches in 2022. 1Password had zero. Four years later, is LastPass worth trusting again? We examine both honestly.
This comparison used to be close. In 2020, LastPass and 1Password were the two most popular password managers and the choice between them was genuinely difficult. Then 2022 happened.
The LastPass breaches of 2022
LastPass suffered two significant security incidents in 2022. In the first, attackers accessed LastPass developer systems and source code. In the second, which LastPass initially downplayed, attackers used information from the first breach to access a third-party cloud storage service containing encrypted user vault backups and unencrypted metadata.
The encrypted vaults themselves were protected by users master passwords, so strong unique master passwords provided real protection. However, the unencrypted metadata โ including website URLs โ was a serious problem. Attackers knew which sites people had saved passwords for. LastPass handled the communication around both incidents poorly, being slow to disclose the full extent of the damage.
1Password in the same period
1Password had zero breaches. They use a dual-key encryption model where your Secret Key is combined with your master password โ this means that even if 1Password servers were compromised, your vault cannot be decrypted without your Secret Key, which never leaves your devices.
Features in 2026
1Password has continued improving: the Watchtower feature monitors for data breaches and weak passwords, Travel Mode hides sensitive vaults at border crossings, and the apps are polished across every platform. There is no free tier โ plans start at $2.99 per month.
LastPass has rebuilt significantly since 2022 and their current security architecture is genuinely improved. They offer a free tier (limited to one device type), which 1Password does not. For users on very tight budgets who cannot use 1Password, LastPass free is still usable โ but we would prefer Bitwarden free over LastPass free given the breach history.
The recommendation
Choose 1Password. The breach history matters. Trust is the core product of a password manager and LastPass damaged that trust significantly in 2022. 1Password at $2.99/month is affordable and the security track record is clean. If budget is genuinely a constraint, use Bitwarden free rather than LastPass.
