ActiveCampaign Review 2025: Is It Worth the Premium Price?
ActiveCampaign is the most powerful email automation tool available under $100/month. But power comes with complexity. Here is whether it is right for you.
ActiveCampaign occupies a specific and valuable niche: it is the most powerful email marketing and automation platform available to small and medium businesses without enterprise pricing. The question is whether that power is worth paying for โ and for most people, it depends entirely on how you intend to use it.
What makes ActiveCampaign different
The automation builder is the headline feature. You can create conditional sequences based on almost any subscriber behaviour: emails opened, links clicked, pages visited, purchases made, tags applied, or combinations of all of these. The depth of conditional logic available in ActiveCampaign automation is genuinely superior to Mailchimp, ConvertKit, and most competitors under $100/month.
The CRM
ActiveCampaign includes a built-in CRM that tracks deals, contacts, and sales pipelines. For businesses that manage a mix of marketing and sales activity, having email marketing and CRM in one platform saves both money and the complexity of integrating separate tools. The CRM is basic compared to dedicated platforms like Salesforce but sufficient for small sales teams.
Deliverability
ActiveCampaign has strong deliverability โ your emails actually reach inboxes rather than spam folders. This is partly due to their domain verification process and partly their reputation as a quality sender. In our testing, deliverability was consistently better than Mailchimp, particularly for cold reactivation campaigns.
The learning curve
ActiveCampaign is not beginner-friendly. The interface is dense, the terminology assumes marketing knowledge, and building effective automations requires planning. If you are sending simple monthly newsletters to a list, the complexity is not worth it. If you are building multi-step nurture sequences and sales pipelines, the complexity is justified by the capability.
Pricing
ActiveCampaign starts at $29/month for 1,000 contacts. It scales with contact count, which is the standard model. There is no free tier. The value proposition improves significantly as you build more automations โ a simple setup is expensive for what you get, but a sophisticated automation system is excellent value at the same price.
The verdict
ActiveCampaign is worth it for businesses with active sales processes, e-commerce stores, or anyone who wants to build sophisticated automated sequences. It is not worth it for simple newsletter sending โ use ConvertKit or Mailchimp instead and save the money.
