Bitwarden for Families in 2026: Is the $40/Year Plan Worth It?
Bitwarden Families costs $40 per year for up to 6 people. We look at what you get, how the sharing works, and whether it is better than using individual free accounts.
Bitwarden Families costs $40 per year, which works out to $3.33 per month for up to six family members. The question is whether the family plan is meaningfully better than each family member using their own free Bitwarden account.
What the family plan adds over free
The main addition is the shared organisation vault. This lets you create shared password collections that all family members can access. This is genuinely useful for household accounts like streaming services, utilities, and shared logins that multiple people need. Without the family plan, sharing passwords requires either copying them to each person or using the insecure share feature of individual free accounts.
Premium features for everyone
The family plan includes Bitwarden Premium for all six members. Premium adds advanced two-factor authentication options including hardware key support, encrypted file attachments up to 1GB per person, and the password health reports that identify weak, reused, or compromised passwords. The premium features alone cost $10 per year per person if purchased individually. For three or more family members, the family plan at $40 per year is better value.
How the sharing actually works
You create a shared collection in the organisation vault. You add items to the shared collection. All family members who have been given access to that collection can see and use those passwords. Individual vaults remain completely private. You can create multiple collections with different access levels if needed.
Managing the family organisation
The family admin can invite up to six members, manage who has access to which collections, and see the audit log of what has been shared. Non-admin members only see their personal vault and the shared collections they have been granted access to.
The verdict
Bitwarden Families is worth it for any household with three or more people who want to share passwords securely. The shared vault is genuinely useful and the premium features for all members make the economics compelling. At $40 per year it is one of the best value family software subscriptions available.
