Bitwarden for Families in 2026: Is the $47.88/Year Plan Worth It?

Bitwarden raised the Families plan price from $40 to $47.88/year in January 2026. We update our review with correct pricing, new features, and whether it is still worth it.

UPDATE โ€” January 2026: Bitwarden raised the Families plan price from $40/year to $47.88/year. This article has been updated to reflect current pricing. The original $40/year figure is no longer accurate.

Bitwarden Families now costs $47.88 per year ($3.99/month) for up to 6 people โ€” up from the $40/year price it held since 2016. This was Bitwarden's first ever price increase, and it came alongside a meaningful set of new features. We look at whether the updated plan is still worth it, how the sharing works, and whether it beats individual free accounts.

What changed in January 2026

Bitwarden didn't just raise prices โ€” it added features to justify the increase:

  • Vault health alerts โ€” proactive notifications when your passwords are weak, reused, or exposed in data breaches
  • Password coaching โ€” real-time flags when you access at-risk passwords, with guided steps to fix them
  • 5x more attachment storage โ€” expanded from 1 GB to 5 GB per member
  • 2x more security keys for 2FA โ€” now supports up to 10 hardware keys, biometrics, and passkeys per account

Existing subscribers received a one-time 25% loyalty discount on their first renewal. If you're a new subscriber, you're paying $47.88/year from the start.

Per person, the Families plan works out to $7.98/year โ€” under $1/month each for 6 members. Even at 3 members you're paying less than buying individual Premium subscriptions.

What the family plan adds over free accounts

The core addition is the shared organisation vault. This lets you create shared password collections that all family members can access. Think streaming services, home Wi-Fi, shared bank logins, healthcare portals, utility accounts โ€” any password that more than one person needs.

Without the family plan, sharing requires texting passwords, using notes apps, or Bitwarden's basic send feature. The shared vault is a proper solution.

Premium features for all 6 members

Every member on the Families plan gets a full Premium account โ€” not a restricted family tier. Premium features included for everyone:

  • Advanced 2FA (up to 10 hardware keys, YubiKey, Duo, biometrics, passkeys)
  • Built-in TOTP authenticator (replaces Google Authenticator or Authy)
  • 5 GB encrypted file storage per person
  • Vault health reports โ€” spots weak, reused, and breached passwords
  • Emergency access โ€” designate a trusted contact who can request vault access
  • Email alias integration
  • Priority support

Premium individually costs $19.80/year per person. For 3+ family members, the Families plan is better value even at the new price.

How the sharing actually works

  1. The plan owner creates a shared collection (e.g. "Streaming", "Banking", "Home")
  2. Passwords and secure notes are added to that collection
  3. All members granted access to that collection can see and use those items
  4. Each person's individual vault stays completely private โ€” family members can't see your personal passwords

You can create multiple collections with different access levels. For example, you might share the streaming collection with everyone but keep the banking collection limited to adults.

10 GB of shared organisation storage is included on top of each member's personal 5 GB.

Managing the family organisation

The family admin (plan owner) can:

  • Invite up to 5 additional members via email
  • Control which members access which collections
  • View audit logs of shared items
  • Manage billing and plan settings

Members don't need to live with you. Bitwarden allows inviting anyone โ€” a parent, sibling, or trusted friend. If they already have a Bitwarden account, their existing vault carries over and they get upgraded to Premium immediately.

What happens if you cancel

Your data is never deleted. On cancellation:

  • Each member reverts to a free individual account
  • Personal vaults stay fully accessible
  • Shared collections go inactive (recoverable if you resubscribe)
  • Premium features are no longer available

No lock-in, no data held hostage.

1Password costs $12/year more and includes one fewer user, but offers a more polished experience โ€” particularly useful for less technical family members. If your household has non-technical users who struggle with password managers, 1Password's smoother interface may be worth the premium.

For most households who prioritise value and security transparency, Bitwarden Families still wins.

Is Bitwarden Families worth it in 2026?

Yes, for most households. At $7.98/person/year with full Premium features for all 6 members, it remains one of the best-value family software subscriptions available.

The January 2026 price increase is real โ€” a 20% jump โ€” but the feature additions that came with it (vault health alerts, more storage, more 2FA keys) are genuinely useful rather than padding. And Bitwarden is still cheaper than every comparable alternative.

The case against: if your family members are non-technical and will struggle with Bitwarden's interface, or if you want Travel Mode for international trips, 1Password Families at $4.99/month is worth considering.

Bottom line: the new $47.88/year price is still a strong deal. If you were happy with Bitwarden at $40, there's no reason to leave.
