Bitwarden Not Autofilling? How to Fix It on Any Browser

Bitwarden autofill stops working for several common reasons. Here is how to diagnose and fix it on Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.

Bitwarden autofill is one of the primary reasons people use a password manager. When it stops working it is frustrating and interrupts your workflow. Here are the most common causes and specific fixes for each browser.

First: understand how Bitwarden matching works

Before troubleshooting, it helps to understand why autofill triggers on some sites and not others. Bitwarden matches login items to websites based on the URI stored in each item. If the URI in the saved item does not match the current page URL, autofill will not trigger. The matching can be set to several modes: base domain (most common), host, starts with, exact, regex, or never. Base domain matching is the most permissive and resolves most matching issues.

Fix 1: Check the URI in the saved item

Open your Bitwarden vault and find the item for the site that is not autofilling. Click to view the item. Check the URI field. It should contain a URL that matches the site you are trying to autofill. For example, an item with URI https://accounts.google.com will match when you are at any Google account login page. If the URI is missing or incorrect, edit the item and add the correct URL. Click the URI matching dropdown next to the URI field and select Base domain for the most permissive matching.

Fix 2: Check that autofill is enabled

Click the Bitwarden extension icon in your browser toolbar. Click the settings cog icon. Go to Auto-fill settings. Verify that auto-fill is enabled. Enable Auto-fill on Page Load if you want credentials filled automatically when you arrive at a login page. Enable the option to show the auto-fill menu on form fields if you prefer clicking to fill rather than automatic filling. One of these should be enabled for autofill to work.

Fix 3: Chrome-specific fixes

Chrome sometimes prevents extension scripts from running on specific pages, particularly newly opened tabs or pages loaded before the extension was active. Try refreshing the page with the Bitwarden extension active. The keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+L on Windows or Cmd+Shift+L on Mac manually triggers autofill regardless of automatic settings, which can fill credentials even when auto-detection has not triggered.

If Bitwarden is not showing autofill suggestions on a specific site, right-click the Bitwarden extension icon, go to Manage Extension, and verify permissions include access to the affected site. Some sites that use custom login forms embedded in iframes may not support extension autofill due to browser security restrictions on cross-origin iframe injection.

Fix 4: Firefox-specific fixes

Firefox has stricter extension permission controls than Chrome. If Bitwarden is not working on specific sites, right-click the Bitwarden icon in your toolbar and check the permissions settings. Ensure Bitwarden has permission to access the site you are trying to use. You may need to grant permission for specific sites if it was not granted during installation. Firefox private windows require separate permission grants for extensions.

Fix 5: Safari-specific fixes

Safari requires explicit permission grants for each domain. In Safari menu, go to Settings, then Extensions, find Bitwarden, and check which websites it is permitted to access. Set it to Allow on All Websites or specifically add the domains where you need autofill. Safari also has restrictions on autofill in certain security contexts. If autofill works on some sites but not others after granting permissions, the site may be using a login form format Safari extension restrictions prevent autofill from accessing.

Fix 6: The page URL does not match your saved URI

This is the most common reason autofill silently fails without error messages. Sites sometimes move their login pages, change subdomains, or use different URLs in different contexts. Your saved item may have the old URL. Update the URI in the saved item to match the current login page URL. Copy the URL from your browser address bar when you are on the login page and paste it into the item URI field.

Fix 7: Reinstall the browser extension

If none of the above resolves the issue, remove and reinstall the Bitwarden browser extension. Your vault data is stored separately and is not affected by reinstalling the extension. The reinstallation refreshes the extension code and permissions, which resolves issues caused by browser updates that change extension compatibility.

When autofill will never work

Some sites actively block password manager autofill through technical mechanisms. Banking sites in some regions and government login portals occasionally implement restrictions. In these cases, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+L to open the Bitwarden overlay and click to fill, or copy and paste the password from the Bitwarden app manually.
