Bitwarden Not Autofilling? How to Fix It on Any Browser
Bitwarden autofill stops working for several common reasons. Here is how to diagnose and fix the issue on Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.
Bitwarden autofill is one of the main reasons people use a password manager. When it stops working, it is frustrating. Here are the most common causes and specific fixes for each browser.
Fix 1: Check the URI matching setting
Bitwarden matches login items to websites based on the URI stored in the item. If the URI does not match the current page URL, autofill will not trigger. Open your Bitwarden vault and find the item for the site that is not autofilling. Check the URI field. It should contain the base domain like https://example.com. Click the URI matching dropdown and try different settings: base domain matching is the most permissive and resolves most matching issues.
Fix 2: Check if autofill is enabled
Click the Bitwarden extension icon in your browser. Click the settings cog. Go to Auto-fill. Make sure Enable Auto-fill on Page Load is turned on if you want automatic filling, or check that Show Auto-fill Menu on Form Fields is enabled for the click-to-fill option.
Fix 3: Chrome-specific fix
Chrome sometimes prevents extensions from injecting content on certain pages. Try refreshing the page with the extension active. If the site uses an iframe for the login form, autofill may not work because browser extensions cannot inject into cross-origin iframes by default. Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+L on Windows or Cmd+Shift+L on Mac to trigger autofill manually.
Fix 4: Firefox-specific fix
Firefox has stricter extension permissions than Chrome. If Bitwarden is not autofilling on specific sites, right-click the Bitwarden icon and check that it has permission to access the current site. You may need to grant additional permissions.
Fix 5: Safari-specific fix
On Safari, Bitwarden requires explicit permission for each domain. In Safari Preferences, go to Extensions, find Bitwarden, and check the websites where it is allowed to run. Make sure it is set to allow on all websites or specifically on the domains where you need autofill.
Fix 6: Re-install the extension
If none of the above work, remove and reinstall the Bitwarden browser extension. Your vault data is stored separately and is not affected by reinstalling the extension.
