Cloudways Review 2026: Is It Worth the Price for WordPress?
Cloudways starts at $11/month and gives you managed cloud hosting without managing servers yourself. After 90 days of testing here is whether it justifies the premium.
Cloudways occupies an interesting position in the hosting market. It is more expensive than shared hosting but significantly cheaper than fully managed solutions like Kinsta or WP Engine. It gives you cloud infrastructure performance without requiring server administration skills. After 90 days of testing, here is whether it lives up to the positioning.
What Cloudways actually is
Cloudways is a managed cloud hosting platform that sits on top of major cloud providers. You choose your underlying infrastructure from AWS, Google Cloud, DigitalOcean, Vultr, or Linode, and Cloudways manages the server configuration, security, and management layer for you. You pay Cloudways a management fee on top of the underlying cloud provider cost. This gives you the performance of major cloud infrastructure with significantly less technical overhead than managing a VPS yourself.
Performance compared to shared hosting
The performance difference between Cloudways and shared hosting is real and measurable. In our testing with identical WordPress installations, Cloudways on DigitalOcean averaged 89ms response time compared to 142ms on Hostinger and 165ms on SiteGround. Under simulated traffic spikes using loader.io, shared hosting sites slowed significantly while Cloudways maintained consistent response times. This matters for sites with unpredictable traffic or higher baseline visitor counts.
The control panel
Cloudways uses a custom panel designed for developers and technically confident users. It is clean and well-organised but assumes familiarity with concepts like PHP workers, application firewalls, and server scaling. Non-technical users will have a steeper learning curve than with cPanel or hPanel. If you are not comfortable with these concepts, shared hosting with SiteGround or Hostinger is a better starting point.
WordPress-specific features
Cloudways includes one-click WordPress installation, staging environments on all plans, automatic backups with configurable retention, SSH access, WP-CLI, and Git deployment. For WordPress developers and agencies these features are standard requirements. Having all of them without needing to configure a raw VPS is the core value proposition.
Support quality
Cloudways support is available 24/7 via live chat and ticketing. For standard questions response times were fast. For complex issues the support quality is good but assumes technical knowledge. Support agents are comfortable discussing server configuration, PHP settings, and Nginx configuration. They are less suited to hand-holding non-technical users through basic tasks.
Pricing and value
Cloudways starts at $11 per month for a DigitalOcean 1GB server. This covers one or several small WordPress sites. For agencies managing multiple client sites, the per-site cost drops significantly as you add sites to the same server. A $22 per month server comfortably handles 5-10 small WordPress sites, making the per-site cost lower than most shared hosting alternatives.
Who should choose Cloudways
Developers and agencies managing multiple WordPress sites. Site owners whose traffic has outgrown shared hosting. Anyone who wants cloud infrastructure performance without full server management. Users comfortable with slightly more technical hosting management. Cloudways is not the right choice for beginners or anyone who wants the simplest possible setup experience.
