How to Use Ahrefs Free Webmaster Tools in 2026
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free for your own website and includes backlink data and keyword rankings most sites pay $99/month for. Here is how to use it.
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools gives you access to real Ahrefs data for your own website at no cost. Most website owners do not realise this exists and pay for third-party tools that provide inferior data. Here is what you get and how to use it effectively.
What Ahrefs Webmaster Tools includes for free
Backlink profile for your domain: every website linking to you, the pages they link to, and the anchor text they use. Organic keyword rankings: every keyword your site ranks for in Google, with position, search volume, and traffic estimates. Site audit: technical SEO issues including broken links, missing meta descriptions, slow pages, and crawl errors. All of this is completely free with no limit on the number of site verification you can add.
Setting up Ahrefs Webmaster Tools
Go to ahrefs.com/webmaster-tools. Create a free account. Add your website as a property. Verify ownership using the HTML tag method, DNS record, or Google Search Console connection. Once verified, Ahrefs immediately shows data for your domain.
The backlink report
Go to Backlinks in the left menu. You will see every website linking to yours. Sort by Domain Rating to see your most authoritative backlinks. Look for: low-quality spam links that might be hurting your rankings (a toxic link audit). Links from sites you did not know about that might signal relationships worth developing. Pages on your site that attract the most links, which tells you what content performs best for link building.
The organic keywords report
Go to Organic keywords. You will see every keyword your site ranks for with current position and estimated monthly traffic. Filter by position 8-20 to find your best opportunities for quick ranking improvements. These keywords are already indexed and ranking but need a small push to reach page one.
The site audit
Run a site audit monthly. The report shows critical issues that need fixing first and lower priority issues to address over time. Start with broken links and pages returning errors, then move to missing or duplicate title tags and meta descriptions.
