NordVPN Not Working with Netflix? How to Fix It in 2026

If NordVPN is showing a Netflix proxy error, here are 8 fixes that work in most cases.

Netflix shows the proxy error when it detects you are using a VPN. NordVPN works with Netflix for most users most of the time but occasionally specific servers get blocked. Here is how to fix it when it happens, in order of how likely each fix is to work.

Why Netflix blocks VPN servers

Netflix does not block the WireGuard or OpenVPN protocols. They maintain a database of IP addresses associated with VPN providers and data centres. When too many accounts appear to access Netflix from the same IP address, Netflix flags that IP as a VPN exit and shows the proxy error to users connecting through it. NordVPN counters this by rotating IP addresses on streaming servers regularly. Sometimes a server gets blocked before NordVPN rotates it.

Fix 1: Switch servers (works in most cases)

Disconnect from your current NordVPN server and connect to a different server in the same country. Netflix blocks specific IP addresses, not entire VPN providers. A different server in the same country will typically have a different IP address that Netflix has not yet blocked. This is the fix that works in the majority of cases and should be tried first before anything else.

Fix 2: Clear browser cookies

Netflix stores location information in cookies. These cookies can persist even after you switch to a new VPN server, causing Netflix to still think you are in the wrong location. Clear your browser cookies and cache completely, then reconnect to NordVPN and reload Netflix. In Chrome go to Settings, Privacy and Security, Clear browsing data, and select Cookies and cached images. Do not select browsing history or saved passwords unless you want to clear those too.

Fix 3: Use a SmartPlay server

NordVPN SmartPlay servers are specifically optimised for streaming and managed to stay ahead of Netflix blocking. In the NordVPN app, open the server list and look for streaming-optimised or SmartPlay server categories. Select one in your target country. NordVPN also automatically applies SmartPlay when you connect to any server, but streaming-optimised servers have IPs that are more aggressively maintained for streaming access.

Fix 4: Switch from browser to the Netflix app

The Netflix website and the Netflix app use slightly different detection methods. If the web browser is showing the proxy error, try opening the Netflix app on your device instead. The app sometimes succeeds when the browser fails on the same server.

Fix 5: Switch protocols

In NordVPN settings, try switching your connection protocol. If you are using NordLynx (WireGuard), switch to OpenVPN. Different protocols use different connection methods and switching can sometimes resolve blocks. Go to NordVPN Settings, then Connection, and change the protocol. Reconnect and try Netflix again.

Fix 6: Use the NordVPN full app rather than browser extension

The NordVPN browser extension only routes browser traffic through the VPN. The full NordVPN desktop or mobile app routes all traffic. If you are using the extension, switch to the full app, disable the extension, and reconnect. The full app implementation is more reliable for streaming.

Fix 7: Contact NordVPN support

NordVPN has a dedicated streaming support function. Open live chat on the NordVPN website and ask specifically which servers currently work with Netflix in your target country. Support agents have access to real-time information about which servers are working with which streaming services and can point you to ones with clean IPs that will work immediately.

Fix 8: Wait and try again

NordVPN rotates and updates IP addresses on streaming servers regularly. If multiple servers are currently blocked for a specific Netflix region, waiting 24-48 hours and trying again sometimes resolves the issue as NordVPN updates its server pool. This is not ideal but it is relevant context when other fixes have not worked.

If nothing works

If you have tried multiple servers, cleared cookies, switched protocols, and contacted support without resolution, ExpressVPN is the most reliable VPN for Netflix globally and has the widest coverage of regional Netflix libraries. NordVPN refund policy allows a 30-day money-back request if the service does not meet your needs.
