NordVPN Review 2026: The Most Tested VPN on the Market
NordVPN is the most reviewed VPN available. After our own 90-day test here is what we actually found, including what others do not tell you.
NordVPN is the most heavily marketed VPN in the world. It sponsors podcasts, YouTube channels, and sports events at a scale no competitor matches. Heavy marketing does not necessarily mean a good product. After 90 days of testing across multiple devices, server locations, and use cases, here is our honest assessment.
Speed in real testing
NordVPN using NordLynx, their WireGuard-based protocol, is consistently fast. We averaged 480 Mbps download on a 600 Mbps UK connection across 30 days of testing. Speeds held consistent during peak hours without the significant drops we see from some competitors. The NordLynx protocol connects in under 2 seconds on most servers and handles network switching between WiFi and mobile data cleanly.
On servers further away, like connecting from the UK to US servers, speeds averaged 280-320 Mbps which is more than sufficient for any use case. OpenVPN is available for users who need the more established protocol for specific network environments, though it is slower than NordLynx.
Security and privacy
NordVPN operates under a strict no-logs policy that has been independently verified twice by PricewaterhouseCoopers. The most compelling evidence is real-world: when Finnish authorities seized a NordVPN server in 2018, they found zero user data. The server had no logs, no connection records, and nothing that could identify any user. This is not a marketing claim, it is a documented fact.
NordVPN is incorporated in Panama, a jurisdiction with no data retention laws and no participation in intelligence sharing alliances. All servers run on RAM-only infrastructure meaning data cannot persist between sessions even if a server were physically seized. DNS requests are handled by NordVPN own servers so your ISP cannot see which sites you visit even when connected.
Streaming performance
NordVPN SmartPlay technology specifically manages streaming server IP addresses to stay ahead of platform blocking. In our testing we successfully streamed Netflix US, UK, Japan, and Australia. Disney+ US and UK worked consistently. BBC iPlayer worked on every UK server we tested. Hulu required US servers which worked without issue.
The SmartPlay feature works automatically. You do not need to select specific streaming servers or configure anything differently. Connect to a server in the country whose streaming content you want and SmartPlay handles the rest.
Extra features
Threat Protection is a significant added value. It blocks malware, trackers, and intrusive ads at the network level without requiring a separate browser extension. In testing it blocked known malicious domains and significantly reduced tracker requests on ad-heavy websites. Unlike browser ad blockers, Threat Protection works across all apps and browsers on the device.
Double VPN routes your traffic through two separate VPN servers before reaching its destination. This adds significant privacy at the cost of some speed. Useful for journalists, activists, or anyone with a specific threat model requiring maximum anonymity. Meshnet lets you create private networks between your own devices, which has practical use for accessing home computers remotely.
Pricing and plans
NordVPN Standard on a two-year plan is typically $3.99/month. NordVPN Plus adds a password manager and breach scanner. NordVPN Complete adds 1TB of encrypted cloud storage. Most users need Standard. The promotional rate applies for the first billing period and renewal rates are higher, so note your renewal date.
The verdict
NordVPN earns its reputation. The speed, streaming performance, privacy credentials, and Threat Protection feature make it the best all-round VPN for most users. It is not the cheapest option but it is genuinely among the best, and at $3.99/month on a long plan it offers strong value for what it delivers.
