Privacy: Mullvad wins — and it is not close

Mullvad is the most private mainstream VPN available. Here is what sets it apart:

• NordVPN (NordLynx protocol): Average 480 Mbps on a 500 Mbps connection. Ping added: ~8ms on nearby servers.
• Mullvad (WireGuard protocol): Average 380 Mbps. Ping added: ~12ms on nearby servers.

Both are fast enough for 4K streaming, gaming, and large downloads. The gap only matters if you are on a very fast connection (500 Mbps+) and doing something latency-sensitive.

Streaming: NordVPN wins

This is where the gap widens. NordVPN has dedicated streaming servers optimised to stay ahead of Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Disney+ detection. In our testing:

• NordVPN: Unblocked Netflix US, UK, Japan, and Australia. BBC iPlayer 40/40 sessions. Disney+ 40/40.
• Mullvad: Netflix US worked inconsistently. BBC iPlayer blocked on most servers. No dedicated streaming servers.

Mullvad does not optimise for streaming. It is not a streaming VPN. If you want to watch Netflix from another country, use NordVPN.

Server network

NordVPN: 6,300+ servers in 111 countries. Mullvad: ~700 servers in 40 countries. For most use cases — private browsing, securing public Wi-Fi, bypassing ISP throttling — Mullvad's network is sufficient. For international streaming or needing a server in a specific country, NordVPN is better.

Mullvad's apps are functional and well-designed but more spartan. Split tunnelling is not available on iOS. The desktop app is excellent; mobile is adequate.
