ProtonVPN Review 2026: The Best VPN for Privacy?

ProtonVPN is built by the team behind ProtonMail and is the only free VPN we recommend without reservations. Here is the full honest review.

ProtonVPN occupies a unique position in the VPN market. It is built by Proton AG, the Swiss company behind ProtonMail, with a genuine privacy-first culture rather than privacy as a marketing position. The free tier is the only free VPN we recommend without caveats. Here is what makes it different and where it falls short.

Why ProtonVPN is different

Proton AG was founded by scientists who met at CERN with a genuine mission around privacy. ProtonMail predates the VPN product and established the company credibility. The business model is transparent: free users subsidise paid users who pay for premium features. Free users are not the product. This is fundamentally different from most free VPNs which monetise user data to fund operations.

Open source and verifiable

ProtonVPN apps are fully open source. Every line of code is publicly available on GitHub. Any security researcher, developer, or user can inspect the code and verify that the privacy claims are technically implemented. This is the strongest form of trust available: you do not have to believe their marketing because you can verify the implementation yourself. No other major commercial VPN offers this level of transparency.

Speed and performance

ProtonVPN paid plans are fast. Using WireGuard we averaged 450 Mbps on UK servers, which is competitive with NordVPN and Surfshark. The free tier is significantly slower because free users are de-prioritised on congested servers. In peak hours, free tier speeds can drop to 30-80 Mbps which is sufficient for browsing but can struggle with 4K streaming.

Secure Core is ProtonVPN distinctive routing feature. It routes traffic through multiple servers in privacy-friendly countries (Iceland, Switzerland, Sweden) before reaching the destination server. This adds significant protection against server-level compromise at the cost of speed, typically 40-60% slower than direct connections. For users with elevated threat models this trade-off is worth it.

Privacy and jurisdiction

ProtonVPN is incorporated in Switzerland, which has some of the strongest privacy protections in the democratic world. Switzerland is not an EU member and is outside all major intelligence sharing alliances. Swiss law requires a Swiss court order to compel data disclosure, and Swiss courts apply a high standard. In 2021 ProtonVPN received a Swiss court order to log the IP address of a specific user. They complied with the legal order but could not provide historical data because none was retained.

The no-logs policy has been audited by SEC Consult and Securitum. Annual audits are the commitment, which is more frequent than most competitors.

Streaming performance

ProtonVPN paid plans reliably unblock Netflix US, UK, and most major streaming services. The Stealth protocol is particularly useful for networks that actively block VPN traffic, which is relevant for users on corporate networks or in restrictive countries. Free tier users cannot access streaming servers.

The free tier honestly assessed

ProtonVPN free includes unlimited data, servers in 3 countries (US, Netherlands, Japan), one simultaneous connection, and all security features including the kill switch. Speeds are slower than paid. Streaming is not supported. For occasional privacy protection, public WiFi security, and basic privacy from your ISP, the free tier is completely adequate. It is the only free VPN we recommend without reservation.

Pricing

ProtonVPN Plus on a two-year plan is $4.99/month. This includes 65+ server countries, 10 simultaneous connections, streaming support, Secure Core, and Tor over VPN. The Proton Unlimited bundle at $7.99/month adds ProtonMail, ProtonDrive, and ProtonCalendar, which is excellent value if you want the full Proton privacy ecosystem.

The verdict

ProtonVPN is the best VPN for users who prioritise privacy above all else. The open source code, Swiss jurisdiction, annual audits, and genuine privacy-first culture make it the most trustworthy option in the market. For the average user who primarily wants privacy and streaming, NordVPN is faster and cheaper. For privacy-focused users, journalists, activists, or anyone who wants to verify the code themselves, ProtonVPN is the right choice.
