Ahrefs and SEMrush are the two most direct competitors in the professional SEO tool market. Both start at approximately $100/month. Both have large keyword databases, comprehensive backlink analysis, site auditing, and rank tracking. After using both as primary SEO research tools over a 12-month period, here is an honest comparison of where each genuinely excels.
Keyword data quality
This is the capability most SEO professionals care most about and the comparison is genuinely close. We tested both against confirmed Google Search Console data for 50 keywords across three categories. For high-volume keywords above 10,000 monthly searches, both were within 20% of actual Search Console figures, which is acceptable given the estimation methodology. For medium-volume keywords between 500 and 5,000 searches, Ahrefs was closer to Search Console data in the majority of test cases.
Ahrefs Parent Topic feature is genuinely useful. Rather than showing you only the exact keyword you searched, it groups related keywords and shows which single page could rank for all of them. This changes content strategy from writing one post per keyword to writing one comprehensive post per topic. SEMrush does not have a direct equivalent.
Backlink data
Ahrefs has historically had the strongest backlink database. The Ahrefs index is large, frequently updated, and the data presentation is the most useful we have seen. Understanding which sites link to you, which specific pages they link to, and what anchor text they use is clear and actionable. SEMrush backlink database is also substantial but in our testing found slightly fewer linking domains for the same properties compared against Ahrefs. For backlink research and competitor link analysis, Ahrefs has the edge.
Site audit
SEMrush site audit is more comprehensive in terms of issues identified. It flags over 130 different issue types with clear prioritisation guidance. The JavaScript rendering audit is particularly strong for modern web applications. Ahrefs site audit covers the essential issues well but with less granularity. For sites where technical SEO is a significant focus, SEMrush audit provides more actionable detail.
Competitive research
Both provide competitor analysis but SEMrush competitive research suite is broader. The Advertising Research tool shows competitor PPC keywords and ad copy which has no equivalent in Ahrefs. The Content Gap tool in SEMrush is well-implemented. Ahrefs Content Gap is also excellent. For teams doing both organic and paid search research, SEMrush covers more ground. For teams focused purely on organic search, Ahrefs covers the requirements equally well.
User interface
Ahrefs interface is cleaner and faster. Navigation between tools is more intuitive and data loads more quickly. SEMrush interface is more comprehensive but more complex as a result. New SEMrush users report a longer learning curve. Ahrefs can be used productively from day one with less training. For teams adding new members regularly who need to come up to speed quickly, Ahrefs lower interface complexity is a practical advantage.

Ahrefs Lite starts at $99/month. SEMrush Pro starts at $119.95/month. At equivalent tiers the pricing is similar. Ahrefs does not offer a free trial of paid plans but provides Webmaster Tools for free. SEMrush offers a 7-day free trial on paid plans. For evaluation purposes, SEMrush trial gives you more time to assess the tool before committing.

For backlink research and keyword data quality: Ahrefs. For technical site audit and competitive PPC research: SEMrush. For interface usability and onboarding: Ahrefs. For feature breadth: SEMrush. Most SEO professionals who use only one tool choose Ahrefs when their primary focus is content and backlink strategy, and SEMrush when their work spans organic, paid, and technical SEO.
