Surfshark and NordVPN are the two best-value mainstream VPNs available. Both have been independently audited, both use RAM-only servers, and both reliably unblock Netflix. The choice between them comes down to price, device count, and whether you want the bundle options.
Price comparison
Surfshark VPN starts at $2.49 per month on a two-year plan. NordVPN starts at $3.99 per month. On a two-year plan that difference is $36 over the full period. Surfshark also offers unlimited simultaneous connections compared to NordVPN which limits you to 10 devices. For households with many devices or people who want to share a subscription, Surfshark is the obvious choice.
Speed comparison
NordVPN is faster. In our testing using WireGuard (NordLynx) and WireGuard respectively, NordVPN delivered 480 Mbps average versus Surfshark at 420 Mbps on a 600 Mbps connection. Both are fast enough for 4K streaming and video calls. The difference is only meaningful on very fast connections above 400 Mbps.
Privacy and security
Both have no-logs policies audited by independent firms. NordVPN was audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers. Surfshark was audited by Cure53. Both use RAM-only server infrastructure. NordVPN has the slight edge from having its no-logs claim proven by a real server seizure in 2018 where no user data was recovered.
The bundle question
This is where Surfshark has a unique advantage. Surfshark One adds antivirus and breach monitoring for $3.99 per month. Surfshark One+ adds Incogni data broker removal for $6.49 per month. Streaming performance
Both unblock Netflix US, UK, Disney+, and BBC iPlayer reliably in our monthly testing. NordVPN has marginally better coverage for niche regional libraries. For mainstream streaming use both perform excellently.
Which should you choose?
Choose Surfshark if: you have more than 10 devices, you want the antivirus and privacy bundle in One or One+, or you want to save money on a family subscription.
