VPN Keeps Disconnecting? 7 Fixes That Actually Work in 2026

A VPN that disconnects repeatedly is annoying and leaves your traffic exposed. Here are the most common causes and how to fix each one.

A VPN that disconnects randomly exposes your traffic every time it drops. Here are the most common causes of VPN disconnections and the specific fixes for each.

Cause 1: Unstable internet connection

A VPN cannot maintain a stable connection if your underlying internet connection is unstable. Test your connection without the VPN. If you are getting frequent drops or high packet loss, fix your internet connection first. Your router may need a restart, your WiFi signal may be weak, or your ISP may be having issues.

Cause 2: Wrong protocol for your network

Some protocols are more stable on certain network types. WireGuard and NordLynx are fast but can be less stable on networks with fluctuating quality. OpenVPN TCP is slower but more reliable on unstable connections. Try switching to OpenVPN TCP in your VPN settings if you are experiencing frequent drops.

Cause 3: Power management on Windows or Mac

Windows and macOS sometimes put network adapters to sleep to save power. This kills the VPN connection. On Windows, go to Device Manager then Network Adapters, right-click your adapter, go to Properties then Power Management, and uncheck Allow this computer to turn off this device to save power. On Mac, go to System Preferences then Energy Saver and check that network access during sleep is enabled.

Cause 4: Firewall or antivirus interference

Security software sometimes interferes with VPN connections. Try temporarily disabling your firewall or antivirus to test whether this is the cause. If the VPN stabilises, add an exception for your VPN application in the security software settings.

Cause 5: Server load

Overloaded VPN servers drop connections more frequently. Switch to a less busy server in the same or nearby region. Most VPN apps show server load. Choose servers with load below 50%.

Cause 6: MTU mismatch

VPNs add overhead to packet sizes. If the resulting packets exceed your network MTU limit, they get fragmented or dropped. In advanced VPN settings, try reducing the MTU value. Common values to try: 1400 or 1300.

Cause 7: Outdated VPN app

Update your VPN app to the latest version. VPN providers regularly fix connection stability issues in updates. If you are running an old version, many fixes are simply not present.
