Our Review Methodology

A complete explanation of how we test, score, and update reviews โ€” so you can judge our work for yourself.

Last updated: April 2026

Editorial independence

RankdSaaS operates independently of the companies whose products we review. Our editorial decisions are made by our review team and are not influenced by commercial relationships.

Specifically:

  • We do not accept payment for reviews, positive coverage, or higher ratings
  • We do not allow vendors to preview reviews before publication or request changes
  • Affiliate commission rates are not considered when writing or scoring a review
  • We do not give higher ratings to tools with better affiliate programmes
  • We do not delete or modify reviews based on vendor requests

If a vendor contacts us to dispute a factual inaccuracy, we will investigate and correct errors if we find them. We will not change opinions or ratings based on pressure from vendors or their PR representatives.

How we select tools to review

We prioritise tools based on three criteria: search volume (how many people are looking for information about this tool), market significance (tools used by a meaningful number of people), and reader requests (tools our audience asks about most frequently).

We do not accept payment to review a tool. Any tool can be submitted for consideration via our contact page, but submission does not guarantee a review and does not influence our rating if we do review it.

The testing process

Every review on RankdSaaS involves a minimum of two weeks of hands-on testing. We use free trials, paid subscriptions, and in some cases accounts provided by vendors for review purposes. Vendor-provided accounts are disclosed in the relevant review.

Our testing process has three phases:

1

Setup and onboarding

We go through the complete signup, setup, and onboarding process as a new user would. We note any friction, unclear instructions, or unexpected requirements. First impressions matter โ€” a tool that is difficult to get started with is penalised for it regardless of its eventual capabilities.

2

Feature testing against use cases

We test each tool against the specific use cases our readers care about most, not just a generic feature checklist. For a VPN this means testing from the locations and against the streaming services our readers use. For a password manager it means testing on the platforms and browsers they actually use.

3

Long-term reliability assessment

We continue using the tool for a minimum of two weeks after initial testing to assess reliability. Tools that perform well in testing but have unreliable uptime, inconsistent speeds, or bugs that only appear over time are scored accordingly.

How we score tools

Each tool receives an overall rating on a 5.0 scale. This is a weighted average of four component scores, each on a 10-point scale and each weighted equally at 25% of the overall score.

5.0
Outstanding. Best in class. Few or no meaningful weaknesses. We recommend this tool to almost everyone in its target audience.
4.0 - 4.9
Excellent. Strong performance with minor weaknesses that do not significantly affect most users.
3.0 - 3.9
Good. Solid option with some notable weaknesses. Worth considering but check whether the weaknesses affect your specific use case.
2.0 - 2.9
Below average. Significant weaknesses that affect most users. We only recommend these tools in specific circumstances.
1.0 - 1.9
Poor. Fundamental problems that make the tool unsuitable for its intended purpose. We do not recommend these tools.

Our update policy

We are committed to keeping reviews accurate and current. Reviews are updated when:

  • A tool changes its pricing structure by more than 10%
  • A significant feature is added, removed, or substantially changed
  • A security incident occurs that affects our assessment
  • We receive credible reader feedback indicating inaccurate information
  • Routine annual review (every review is revisited at minimum once per year)

Every review displays a "Last reviewed" date. The date shown reflects when we last verified the information, not when the page was first published.

Affiliate links and commissions

Some links on RankdSaaS are affiliate links. When you click through and make a purchase, we may receive a commission from the vendor. This commission comes at no additional cost to you โ€” you pay the same price whether you use our link or go directly to the vendor website.

Affiliate relationships do not affect our ratings or recommendations. We have reviewed and recommended tools that pay zero affiliate commission. We have reviewed and rated below average tools that have excellent affiliate programmes. The rating reflects the product, not the commercial relationship.

We disclose affiliate relationships on every page that contains affiliate links via our site-wide affiliate disclosure.

Corrections policy

We take accuracy seriously. If you believe a review contains a factual error, please contact us with the specific claim you believe is incorrect and any supporting evidence. We will investigate within 5 business days and correct errors promptly if verified.

We do not remove reviews or change ratings based on requests from vendors without factual justification for the change. Corrections are made transparently โ€” we note what was changed and when.
