Ahrefs vs SEMrush in 2026: Which Is Actually Better?
Both tools have improved significantly in the past year. After using both full-time for a year, here is an updated verdict on which deserves your $100+ per month.
Ahrefs and SEMrush have been the two dominant SEO platforms for years and both have continued to add features. If you asked us two years ago we would have given a more split verdict. In 2026, the answer is clearer โ though it still depends on your use case.
What changed in the past year
SEMrush rebranded to Semrush and has continued aggressively expanding features into content marketing, social media, and advertising research. Ahrefs has focused on improving core SEO data quality and launched their own search engine, Yep, which gives them first-party data that competitors cannot access.
Backlink data โ Ahrefs still wins
Ahrefs has the largest, most frequently updated backlink index in the industry. If you are doing any serious link building or competitive backlink analysis, the data quality difference is meaningful. SEMrush backlink data has improved but it is still not as comprehensive or as fresh as Ahrefs.
Keyword research โ essentially equal now
Both tools have strong keyword research capabilities. Ahrefs keyword difficulty scores tend to be more accurate for informational content. SEMrush is slightly better for commercial and transactional keywords. The difference is small enough that it should not drive your decision.
Technical SEO audit
SEMrush has a more comprehensive site audit tool that catches more technical issues and provides more actionable recommendations. Ahrefs site audit is good but SEMrush has invested more heavily in this area.
Content marketing tools
SEMrush has a significant advantage here with their Content Marketing Platform, which includes topic research, content templates, and a content audit tool. Ahrefs has some content tools but the breadth and depth of SEMrush is greater for content-focused teams.
Price
Both start at around $100-120 per month for entry-level plans. SEMrush provides more tools for the same price. Ahrefs provides better core SEO data for the same price.
2026 verdict
Choose Ahrefs if: link building and backlink analysis is central to your strategy, you want the most accurate keyword data, or you are a pure SEO practitioner. Choose SEMrush if: you need content marketing and technical SEO tools alongside keyword research, you manage paid search alongside organic, or you want the broadest possible feature set.
