Testing methodology

We test each VPN across Netflix US, Netflix UK, Netflix Japan, Disney+ US, BBC iPlayer, and Hulu from European and Asian server locations. We measure both whether the service unblocks correctly and the streaming quality achieved — a VPN that unblocks Netflix but only delivers 480p is not actually useful.

NordVPN has maintained the most reliable streaming performance in our ongoing tests. Surfshark successfully unblocked Netflix, Disney+, and BBC iPlayer in our tests at a fraction of the cost of the premium options. Performance dropped on a few server locations during peak hours but was generally sufficient for HD streaming. For users who primarily want Netflix and are budget-conscious, Surfshark at $2.49/month is excellent value.

Services that failed our tests

Several VPNs that were previously reliable for streaming failed in our 2026 tests. We do not name them here because the situation changes monthly, but the key lesson is: always check recent reviews before committing to a VPN specifically for streaming. Providers that were excellent two years ago may not work today.

Tips for streaming with a VPN

If a server is not working, try a different server in the same country before giving up — streaming services block specific IP addresses, not entire VPN providers.
